Activities of the Math (Monastery)


The Temple is open for all, irrespective of caste, creed or nationality. Mangalarati at dawn followed by Vedic chanting, meditation and bhajans, regular puja in the morning hours and evening aratrika with bhajans are conducted everyday with Ramanama Sankirtan on Ekadashi days and Sri Saradanam Sankirtan on Thursdays after evening prayer. On other days religious classes are conducted after evening prayer. Special discourses on the lives of the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna are also held on their birthdays. The discourses on the lives of Jesus Christ, Buddha, Srikrishna and other great personalities are also held in the temple on their birthdays with due honour and devotion. Festivals like Bengali New year Day, Durga Mahastomi, Kalipuja, Viswakarma Puja, Saraswati Puja, Ramnavami, Snan yatra, Christmas Eve are also observed regularly.


The birthdays of the Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda are solemnly observed with programmes of Mangalarati, Vedic chanting, Procession, Special puja and Homa, Bhajans, Discourses and Nara-Narayana Seva. The birthday of Sri Ramakrishna Deva is also observed with great devotion through a 5 day long programme of discourses and various other cultural programmes.


Bhakta Sammelan (Devotees’ Conference) is held every year. The programme consists of Vedic chanting, devotional songs, discourses by eminent monks and lay devotees.


Yuva Sammelan (Youth Conference) is held every year. Moreover, Swami Vivekananda’s birth day, the National Youth Day is also observed regularly on 12 January. Vedic chanting, meditation, songs, recitations, speeches, drama etc. by the selected participants and discourses on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda by eminent monks and other personalities in the field are included in the programme.


Relief & Welfare activities are given special emphasis since the inception of the Sevashrama. Distress relief work is also organised every year, where blankets, shirts, trousers, jackets, sarees, dhutis, gamcha, chadars etc. are given to the needy persons. Welfare work in the form of helping financially or giving educational requisites (books / exercise books etc.) to the needy students of neighbouring schools and colleges is done regularly.

Book sales: Books on Religion, Philosophy, Self-improvement and Ramakrishna - Vivekananda and Vedanta are available for sale in Bengali, English and Hindi. Photos and posters of Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda etc. are also available for sale.

Bhava-Prachar (Dissemination of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda ideals and ideas): Monks of the Sevashrama are invited very often to attend Youth Conferences, Devotees’ Conferences and other Cultural programmes held outside. Inside the Sevashrama they also take religious classes after the evening prayer throughout the year.
